Toddler Dentist Visit

Written By: Dr. Thomas Bae, DDS

At what age should parents' bring in their infant to the dentist and have their teeth checked?

Smiling InfantThere is a common misconception about when parents should bring in their children to see the dentist for the first time. Should I wait until all of their teeth come in? Should I wait until they actually have a problem? Do they really need to see a dentist when the baby teeth are going to fall out anyway? So many questions for a visit that is just as important as their doctor visits! And therein lies the problem: so many questions but very little information or awareness about the topic of children's oral health. The fact is the American Academy of Pediatric Dentist (AAPD) recommends that the child see the dentist when their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday!

This may seem too early but there are a variety of reasons why their first visit should be at this time. Not only will the dentist be able to check the child's mouth but it also gives the dentist an opportunity to establish a relationship with the child and parent. This will allow the child to get comfortable with the dental environment and start with a positive experience that will set the tone for years to come. Furthermore, the dentist is able to discuss and educate the parent about what they can do to establish good hygiene habits, healthy dietary and lifestyle choices for the child and the family.

Baby teeth are very important and the last one will not be ready to come out until about age 11 or 12. Tooth pain due to cavities is one of the main reasons for school absences and contributes to difficulty in learning and thriving. It's really never too early to take your child to the dentist or too late!
